Hi, my name is Rob Shaw; I’m a professional Mountain Leader, & Rock Climbing Instructor holding the required NGB qualifications, living in Stourbridge, West Midlands, UK.
I’ve a lifetime passion with the mountains and a specific interest in Mountain Photography; I’ve had the good fortune to travel to some of the more remote area of the world Patagonia/Himalayas & the Greater Ranges. I’ve had my photos published in professional mountaineering journals and featured in number of outdoor magazines.
Snowdon, Scafell Pike & Ben Nevis might be your dream challenge, but I also offer the opportunity for anyone with a passion for the outdoors the chance to explore some of the more remote mountain areas of the UK under the guidance of a qualified Mountain Leader. I currently work as a Climbing Instructor for Dudley MBC, and as a DofE Expedition Assessor for Gold Silver & Bronze Awards.

Why use a qualified Mountain Leader?
Being members of a professional association the MTA affiliated to the BMC, we recognise a Duty of Care and Code of Conduct at all times.
We are familiar with the terrain, we can adapt to any eventuality on the spot as it arises.
Routes can be tailored to suit the abilities of the party.
As a Mountain Leader I am Insured and hold a current (REC) Mountain First Aid Certificate. Mountain (Group) shelter carried.
It’s not a race; I will take all the time in the world (within reason!!)

UK MOUNTAIN WALKING
Who is this aimed at?
Any individual or group who wants to take the next step from local lowland walks to the mountains, or those attempting Charity Mountain Events, i.e. (Example: 3 Peaks Challenge, Brecon Beacons, Snowdon, Scafell Pike etc)
Participants need no previous mountain walking experience but would need to be over 18 years of age and of a reasonable fitness, for example capable of a full least a full day’s ramble over the Malvern’s.
The usual day will start around 7.30-9am with a rendezvous near or as close to the walk start.
Where possible we’ll have a quick breakfast and final weather check at a local cafe, then onto the hills for anything from a 5 to 8 hr trek.
There will be ample time for rest stops and taking photographs, especially at locations I regard as classic vantage points.
Individual/Group Sizes
Ideally from 1-6 persons to a maximum of 9 persons, depending upon the level of previous experience within the group.
INTRODUCTION TOÂ SCRAMBLING
Mountain Scrambling is the natural progression from walking/hiking to Rock Climbing. Scrambling has 3 grades. Grade 1 -Typically the exposed ridges of UK Mountains. Good examples are Striding Edge on Helvellyn, Snowdon’s Crib Goch or Jack’s Rake on Pavey Ark can typically be attempted without ropes and protection.
Grade 2/3 - Will involve the extended use of hands and usually require the use of a rope and protection.
INTRODUCTION TO CLIMBING
The natural progression from Scrambling to Rock Climbing, enjoy the thrill of a day out on the crag, getting to grips with the rock. We specialize in taking small groups out for taster sessions. Instruction can be provided at an indoor climbing wall prior to any day out. These are Single Pitch crags and you will be attached and supported safely by a fixed rope at all times.
PREPARATION FOR EXTREME CHARITY & CHALLENGE EVENTS
The UK Mountains are popular locations for Charity and Challenge Events i.e The 3 Peak Challenge Ben Nevis/Snowdon/Scafell Pike, improve your chances of a successful and more enjoyable event through the use of a qualified Mountain Leader. We can advise on the essential skills required Navigation skills, Choice of Kit, Planning, Training and Fitness programs. Also that critical ascent of one of the Mountains as taster for the main event!
